Lio Piccolo: the lagoon as it was (and perhaps still is)
There are places in the lagoon where time seems to move more slowly. Lio Piccolo is one of them. A narrow road between water and countryside, a few houses, silence. It is a place that doesn’t try to impress, but stays with you.
And it is precisely here that the exhibition Making the lagoon, living in the lagoon: communities and resources between Lio Piccolo and Altino, open until March 29, 2026, takes shape. Don’t expect a traditional museum: it’s more of a narrative, almost a conversation with the territory.
Inside, you’ll find objects, reconstructions, traces. But above all, you’ll find an implicit question: how do you live in such an unstable environment?
The answer is not a single one. Over the centuries, those who lived in this part of the lagoon learned to do a bit of everything: fish, farm, raise animals, produce salt. Not as a romantic choice, but out of necessity. Every activity was based on a fragile balance, always to be renegotiated.
What stands out is not only the past, but how much of this way of living is still visible today. Looking outside from the exhibition center, the landscape seems to tell the same story.
The exhibition starts from the archaeological excavations of Ca’ Foscari and reaches the present without forcing any separation. There is no clear line between “before” and “after”. Rather, a continuity made of adaptations.
And this is perhaps the most interesting point: the lagoon has never been something static. It has always been a living system, constantly evolving.
Going to Lio Piccolo also means stepping out of the rhythm of the historic center. You get there slowly, crossing a landscape that changes step by step. And once you arrive, everything feels more essential.
This is not a visit to fit into a schedule. It’s something to let happen.
For a couple, it can become one of those unplanned moments that you remember more than anything else. No crowds, no noise, just space and time.
